With lockdown this year I've certainly spent more time than I used to playing games. One thing that's kept crossing my mind is how frustrating the lack of backwards compatibility is on consoles. If you were a Harry Potter, LOTR, etc, fan, despite the advances in video-tech (dvd -> blu-ray/digital downloads -> streaming), it's still ridiculously easy to watch older movies. You could: Record them from freeview Watch on-demand on a set-top box (sky/virgin/etc) Pick up a DVD for pennies and plug into any dvd-player/blu-ray player/pc/laptop/console Stream or purchase where available online In part this is because movies have been migrated to newer platforms, and partly because the older media still work with present-day tech. However the same certainly can't be said for games. Imagine your friend/relative got really into x universe, they could easily enjoy all the movies and even soundtracks, but you wouldn't be able to share your experiences playing older games from this world. In some cases the games often feature canon/storytelling that isn't found in other medium.

Well, that's how I wanted to see in Ice Age 6 as the end of the franchise, probably my idea would result in a bad film, but a million times better than 4 and 5, with Manny, Sid and Diego did becoming the only protagonists of the sixth film (like in the first film) with the dramatic tone of the first film back and the profound style of the first film back and ignoring completely any connection with the 4 and 5 in the canon, except for the adult Peaches of Ice Age: Collision Course. The movie, which opened today, doesn't spend too much time gazing into people's faces. It is very scrupulous in the way it establishes a mood of participatory excitement, then draws back far enough so that the classic ballet sequences choreographed by Balanchine and staged by Peter Martins can be seen in their full glory. In these sequences, the camera enhances the fluency of the dancing and of the sweeping Tchaikovsky score by slowly, almost imperceptibly floating forward and upward. Much of the dancing is breathtaking. Darci Kistler's Sugarplum Fairy whirls and leaps with an otherworldly lightness and speed. And Damian Woetzel as her Cavalier moves with a slashing grace. Wendy Whelan's Coffee projects an enigmatic sensuality. And Gen Horiuchi's Tea is a spectacularly acrobatic jack-in-the-box. The film's inclusion of a narration by Kevin Kline pays off. Key changes of scene are unobtrusively introduced by the actor in two or three sentences that clear up any confusion and keep the story moving.
